Today, there are many forces impacting and reshaping the IT world. How will your organization respond? New technologies are being developed and refined constantly. Which are the right choices for moving forward, and which are the black holes and dead ends? Tried-and-true IT approaches are becoming rapidly obsolete. How will your team migrate your valuable legacy into the future -- preserving what has made your operation a success... while navigating around the pitfalls, and taking advantage of new opportunities? With unprecedented industry-wide support, Open Standards have become crucial for ongoing IT success. As the economy globalises, will competitors emerge who harness the power of Open Standards sooner than you do?

Keeping up with the latest developments has become a daunting task. Understanding the underlying dynamics, and grasping the secrets for success, has become even harder. This MasterClass is an absolute must for Architects, IT Managers, IT Directors, Project Leaders, Designers, Analysts, Senior Programmers, Software Development Managers, Business Unit Managers, E-commerce Managers, CTO's, CIO's,….. anyone who has responsibility to authorise, design, develop, deploy, operate, maintain, or manage. The IT Architecture MasterClass is also the right choice for those in established operational, support, development, or consulting organisations of any size who are interested in:

    • Continuously available e-business environments
    • Desktop and Network Security
    • Enterprise Internet Integration
    • Intranet & extranet solutions

This MasterClass is also appropriate to several groups of specialized professionals:

    • In technology-centric industries, sales and marketing professionals can get a significant boost in credibility and effectiveness by understanding and properly using the buzzwords, jargon, and product vocabulary they encounter in daily technical business conversation. This 1-day MasterClass provides an extremely powerful conceptual-framework -- and the biggest vocabulary boost in the least time.

    • Software developers rightly value programming knowledge that helps them get their jobs done faster. This MasterClass is NOT about "coding skills" -- but programmers also need to "see the bigger picture", because they are increasingly being called upon to advise on more strategic decisions. Overall, the Master Series provides the best 4-day insurance against wasting programming time on misguided projects, against making short-sighted recommendations, or picking the wrong tools for the job. The employer (and career) of every programmer, developer, analyst, designer, and systems administrator can benefit greatly from their learning to think like an IT Architect.
This session will be comprehensible and valuable to every manager and executive who attends, AND this session will be sufficiently "meaty" and practical for every technical professional who attends, OR YOUR MONEY BACK! (Mr. Pearlmutter is known world-wide for his unique ability to simultaneously engage and educate the full spectrum of attendees.)

Day 2 - Java Architecture MasterClass                     Thursday 18 April, 2002

Java technology has emerged as the easiest, most cost-effective way to develop enterprise applications for the internet. As such, it is already successfully deployed in well over 75% of the world's largest corporations. But Java is far more than that. Along with XML, Java ushers in a 30-year sea-change in the Language underpinnings that form the very foundations of the IT world. Such "extensible" languages are at the heart of the next generation of the Internet, the basis for "web services", and the driving force behind even deeper changes in computing that will be felt over the coming decades. Java may not be the last, but it is definitely the first extensible programming language to go mainstream (there are already more Java programmers than C/C++ programmers). You might never program in Java, you might even feel it plays no part in your future, but you must understand it and it's implications. This MasterClass is not a programming course, but rather a much more powerful "fast track" to understanding Java in it's full range of manifestations -- as a Virtual Machine; as an abstract Bytecoded Instruction Set; as a virus-proof Secure Runtime Environment for mobile code; as a C-like Syntactic Language (least important, but the way most people think of it); as an Object-Oriented Semantic Language; as an API set; as a platform-independent Platform; as a complement to XML (XML is to Data as Java is to Process); as an Open Standard; as Architecture; as Industry, Community and Marketplace; as the fastest-moving core of the Open Source phenomenon; as an IT Integration strategy; as a discontinuity in the distribution of Intellectual Property; as an integral part of the emerging global Economic Infrastructure. Additionally, this MasterClass introduces J2EE (covered more fully in Day 4), demonstrating a low-risk way to combine Java's compelling economics and flexibility with the requirements of a scalable 24x7 platform for e-business success.

Sample of the topics that will be covered:

  • Big picture & Bare essentials:  What every technical manager needs to know about Java.

  • Cutting through the buzzwords:   What you need to know about Enterprise Java Architecture.

  • Realworld case study:  Filling in the missing pieces for a robust J2EE application.

  • Radical risk reduction in internet time.

  • Looking forward: Strategy & Roadmap for 2003 and beyond.

  • understanding the keys to development and deployment of component-based distributed business applications

  • Components, Containers, Connectors

  • EJB in depth

  • Servlets & JSPs

  • Understanding the "plumbing" beneath the J2EE platform

  • Platform services and container services

  • understanding Java's uniqueness

  • where Java stands in the marketplace

  • what are the dynamics driving Java's future?

  • where are the opportunities for your company?

Day 4 - J2EE and Web Services MasterClass        Wednesday 24 April, 2002

Web Services are the emerging service-oriented architecture for creating dynamic, distributed applications. They are self-contained, self-describing, modular applications that can be published, located, and invoked across the Web. Web services perform functions, which can be anything from simple requests to complicated business processes...Once a Web service is deployed, other applications (and other Web services) can discover and invoke the deployed service.

XML-based web service standards -- open standards that support creation, assembly, deployment, and discovery of dynamic distributed Web Services -- are evolving rapidly, and being refined at a remarkable pace. Even more surprising, Java-based web service implementations are evolving even more rapidly, and are being deployed ahead of expected schedule. XML is the preferred technology in many information-transfer scenarios because of its ability to encode information in a way that is easy to read, process, and generate. Java is an ideal companion to XML: both languages share a similar historical background; both have goals of simplicity, portability, and flexibility; and both continue to be developed in groups that involve industry, development community and academia (W3C, JCP). Not surprisingly Java is the overwhelmingly preferred language for server and client-side XML application development. Java and XML are a natural match for the creation of applications that exploit the web of information where different classes of clients, from a traditional phone, to a Windows desktop, to the latest PDA, consume and generate information that is exchanged between different servers that run on varied system platforms. The portability and extensibility of both XML and Java make them the ideal choice for the flexibility and wide availability requirements of this new web.

Late 2001 brought a rapid wave of realization across the IT industry as the widely-adopted J2EE standard for back-end enterprise infrastructure turned out to be a ready-made engine for WebService implementation. This convergence of XML, Java, and WebServices on the J2EE platform has reached critical mass in 2002, and the proliferation of WebService deployments predicted for 2003 has already begun. But the even bigger news is that the Open Source community is stealing the show -- much to the surprise of Sun, Microsoft, IBM and HP -- and now your can download all the software (even the complete source code!), for free, and get everything your organization needs to develop and deploy Web Services --- without any obligation to anyone or any vendor lock-in of any kind!

Attend this MasterClass -- see how it all comes together, grasp the Open Standards-based Web Services revolution, and learn how you can put it all to work for your organisation!

Sample of the topics that will be covered:

  • the 3 "must have" elements of a WebServices platform
